Bomb devastates McDonald’s in French Basque region
SAINT-JEAN-DE-LUZ, France (AP) _ A bomb exploded early today outside a McDonald’s restaurant in this southwestern port, the second such attack against the fast food outlet in less than a year.
There were no injuries in the 1:30 a.m. attack and no immediate claim of responsibility. But authorities suspected Basque separatists.
Police said a 30-pound gas container placed at the entrance to the restaurant and rigged to explode destroyed about half the restaurant, including the eating area and terrace.
A Basque separatist organization, Iparretarrak, claimed responsibility for an August 1996 attack on the eatery _ the only fast food restaurant in this sunny port city in the French Basque region.
That attack occurred before the restaurant was opened to the public. It had to be rebuilt.
