Durmiente Wins at Belmont

October 14, 1999

BELMONT (AP) _ Durmiente came from just off the pace, then drew away to an 8 1/4-length victory in the allowance feature Thursday at Belmont Park.

Best of Luck, sent off the favorite in the field of five 3-year-olds and up, came from far back to be second, another 6 1/4 lengths before early leader Carry My Colors.

The win was the fourth in nine starts for Durmiente, a 5-year-old Chilean-bred gelding by the Great Shark from the Balcones mare, Doride.

Durmiente carried John Velazquez over 1 1-16 miles in 1:41:1 on a fast track to earn the $28,800 winner’s share of the $48,000 purse for LaMarca Stable.

The winner returned $9.20, $3.20 and $2.10. Best of Luck paid $2.80 and $2.10 and Carry My Colors was $2.10 to show.
