Billy Carter Back In Atlanta Hospital

October 8, 1987

ATLANTA (AP) _ Billy Carter, suffering from pancreatic cancer, was readmitted to an Atlanta hospital Thursday so he could be given special intravenous feedings, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Carter, 50, the younger brother of former President Jimmy Carter, has been diagnosed as having inoperable cancer of the pancreas. He left Emory University Hospital last Saturday to return to his home in Plains, but was hospitalized Sunday in nearby Americus.

He returned to Emory Thursday morning, said spokeswoman Judy Smith.

″Doctors will be supplementing his nutritional requirements through hyperalimentation,″ she said, adding that the process involves intravenous feeding of large quantities of substances high in calories and protein.

Ms. Smith said doctors prescribed hyperalimentation because ″the state of his health is such that he is not ... able to take his full caloric requirement by mouth.″

Carter’s cancer was diagnosed last month after he was hospitalized at Emory for jaunice.
