SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) _ Todd Kurz kicked a 38-yard field goal to give Illinois State a 20-17 overtime victory over Southwest Missouri State in a Gateway Conference game Saturday night.

Southwest Missouri blew a chance for the overtime win on the previous drive when Derek Jensen fumbled on the 1-yard line in a quarterback sneak and Chris Stevens recovered for Illinois State (2-3 overall, 1-0 Gateway).

Southwest Missouri (1-4, 0-2) sent the game into overtime with 9 seconds remaining when Wayne Boyer kicked a 35-yard field goal that tied the score at 17.

Illinois State had stopped Southwest Missouri earlier in the fourth quarter when the Bears had a first-and-goal at the 2.

The game was delayed 45 minutes in the scoreless third quarter when an electrical storm knocked out power at the stadium.

Keith Goodnight scored on a 2-yard run and Bill Hagman threw a 12-yard pass to Tim Achterberg for Illinois State touchdowns.

Jensen had more luck with the quarterback sneak in the first quarter, scoring from 1 yard out.

Michael Cosey rushed for 180 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown, for the Bears. His 41 carries set a school record for a single game. The previous mark of 33 was set by John Gianini in 1976.
