Rhode Island 79, No. 17 George Washington 65
KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Marcie Byrd scored 25 points and Kerry Giroux added 19 Monday night as Rhode Island upset No. 17 George Washington 79-65 in Atlantic 10 women’s basketball.
George Washington (16-5, 9-2 A10) opened up a 14-2 lead after five minutes and extended it to 26-12 before the Rams (15-7, 8-4) came back with a 30-6 run for a 42-32 halftime lead.
Despite foul trouble and turnovers, George Washington rallied, closing to 50-48 on a 3-point shot by Lisa Cermignano with 13:18 left.
But Rhode Island pulled away from there behind Byrd, who scored 15 points in the second half.
Rebecca Bright added 17 points and 10 rebounds for Rhode Island. Darlene Saar paced George Washington with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Debbie Hemery added 17 points.
