Grace Oakes named Maple Queen LXXII
It was all crying and hugging at the end of the 2019 Maple Queen Pageant Saturday night when Grace Oakes was named Maple Queen LXXII.
Grace, 17, of Garrett, is the daughter of Walter and Karen Oakes and senior at Meyersdale Area High School.
“I am so overwhelmed,” Grace said in her new crown and sash. “No words can put how happy I am and how excited I am to go on this journey.”
Grace’s talent was the song “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” which, she said, was an easy choice.
“I’ve loved the ’50s all my life. It was an easy choice,” she said. “I always loved singing. It just came natural to me.”
Karen Oakes said that Grace is talented in everything she does and is also a perfectionist.
“We’re so proud of her. She worked really hard,” Karen Oakes said. “All of her hard work paid off.”
Walter Oakes said there were probably a lot of late nights that went into her talent and other portions of the show.
“She worked extremely hard, as with anything she does,” he said. “We’re very proud of her.”
Grace couldn’t hold back her tears as she held her awards and hugged her many friends who came to congratulate her.
“All of these - the rest of the nine girls - are all so talented and amazing,” she said. “I am absolutely honored.
“I look forward to being the Maple Queen this year and inspiring other people.”
