Florida man gets 3 years for fatal shooting during drug deal

July 26, 2019

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — A Florida man has been sentenced to three years in prison for fatally shooting another man during a drug deal.

The Naples Daily News reports that 23-year-old Stephen Perez Jr. was sentenced Tuesday as part of a deal with prosecutors. He had been facing a third-degree murder charge but ended up pleading no contest to manslaughter and possession with intent to sell marijuana.

Authorities say 19-year-old Juan Herrera Jr. had met with Perez to buy marijuana in May 2018. Both men were in Perez’s truck when Perez shot Herrera.

An investigator hired by the defense found evidence that Herrera was shot and killed while trying to rob Perez.

Prosecutors say they found additional information that prompted them to offer Perez the plea agreement.
