Doctor Who, Guardians of the Galaxy stars highlight Raleigh Supercon
Pop culture, movies, comic books and more will highlight this weekend’s Raleigh Supercon.
In its second year, this family-friendly comic con is Friday through Sunday at the Raleigh Convention Center.
Raleigh Supercon has a slate of celebrity guests including Alice Cooper, ’NSync’s Joey Fatone, William Shatner, Doctor Who’s John Barrowman, Catherine Tate, and the Karate Kid himself, Ralph Macchio. Guardians of the Galaxy fans will have a chance to meet several actors from the franchise including Dave Bautista (Drax), Sean Gunn (Kraglin) and Terry Notary (Teenage Groot).
Other notable guests at this event include voice actor and puppeteer Steve Whitmire, who is best known for his career with The Muppets as Kermit the Frog, Ernie, Statler, Rizzo the Rat, Beaker, Wembley Fraggle, Bean Bunny and Sprocket; puppeteer Caroll Spinney, who is known for playing Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, and Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants.
A few guests have canceled appearances at this weekend’s event.
Guardians of the Galaxy stars Karen Gillan (Nebula) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis) will not be attending the event this weekend, organizers announced Thursday.
“We regret to announce that Management for Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff has pulled them from our event at the last minute,” organizers wrote in a post on Facebook. They added that no reason was given for the cancelation.
Saturday-only and three day passes have sold out, but there are still some tickets available for Friday and Sunday. If you want to attend on Saturday, there are still a few tickets left for Saturday After-Dark, which gets you into the convention starting at 4 p.m. and includes access to the evening programs.
All admission tickets get you access to panels, the exhibition hall and other events including table games and cosplay fun. As with any comic-con type of event, you will likely need to pay for photos or autographs with your favorite celebrities, so check the Raleigh SuperCon website for prices and availability.
“Doctor Who” and “Arrow” star John Barrowman is known for his cosplay, so look for him to come up with something special for this weekend. If you want to get a professional photo with him in his cosplay outfit, that will cost you $60.
Wizard World will be returning to North Carolina on Aug. 3-5 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. The comic-con was last in the Tar Heel State in 2015 at the Raleigh Convention Center.
Wizard World’s celebrity guests include a trio from Fox’s Gotham - Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot aka Penguin), Sean Pertwee (Alfred) and David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne) - Supernatural stars Lisa Berry and Ruth Connell, Charmed’s Holly Marie Combs and Brian Krause, Rookie of the Year’s Thomas Ian Nicholas and the voice of “Jem” Samantha Newark.
This comic-con will also host panels and events, including learn to play Pokemon and Disney Trivia against Thomas Ian Nicholas and cosplay competitions.
