Watch: Cleveland indie pop band By Light We Loom schools The Cleveland Sessions

CLEVELAND, Ohio – By Light We Loom consists of musicians Shanna Delaney and Eric Ling, but the duo brings the sound of a full band to the stage. Delaney runs loops on a synthesizer and provides the main vocals, while Ling does the guitar work.

The husband-and-wife duo are school teachers by day. Delaney teaches public speaking, British literature, college composition and women’s studies. Ling teaches economics and business classes.

But the two have been both chasing musical dreams, too, for the past decade – first, as members of the folk band Bethesda. During their time in Bethesda, Ling and Delaney traveled around the country, playing major music festivals like Bonnaroo and Bunbury.

When Bethesda broke up in 2014, the two decided they wanted to keep performing.

“We knew that we still loved doing music and we really loved that full band sound, so Eric locked himself in a room for seven hours and learned the entire Ableton electronic program, and we started writing really bad songs,” said Delaney. “And then, we eventually got better.”

“We were able to reinvent ourselves. I was really proud of the fact that we stepped in a new direction,” said Ling. “We went from very folky and rocky, to something indie-pop and dancey.”

In 2016, By Light We Loom debuted its EP, “The Ignition.” The next year, it followed with another EP, “Caught In The Tide.” Now, By Light We Loom is preparing for yet another release this fall.

You can hear songs from the two EPs in By Light We Loom’s performance on The Cleveland Sessions, which took place on Aug. 8. The Cleveland Sessions, presented by Miller Lite, is our concert video series which shows off bands we think you should know about.

The band performed three songs for its appearance: “Stand,” “Clouds Will Cover Us” and “Caught In The Tide.” Check out the video above.

Besides its Cleveland Sessions show, Delaney and Ling also sat down for an interview at Loganberry Books to talk about their formation and history, and what to expect in the future. Watch the interview below.
