State Treasurer Offended By Placement Of His Fair Booth
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) _ State Treasurer Jerry Cosentino, offended at having his booth at the Illinois State Fair next to a men’s restroom, blames politics for the location.
″If you’re not part of the in-group, that’s certainly what happens,″ said Cosentino, a Democrat. ″If they put me any further back, I’d be in the Milwaukee fair.″
Barry Hickman, a spokesman for Republican Gov. James R. Thompson, said the governor plays no role in determining where the state’s officeholders have their exhibit space.
Cosentino’s booth is tucked away in a corner inside the Grandstand building, a long walk from the fair’s main entrance.
″I think it’s terrible,″ he said. ″It’s an insult. I am certainly going to talk to the governor and whoever is in charge.″
Marilyn Raney, manager of space rental at the fairgrounds, said Cosentino’s office requested an exhibit area inside a building this year because his staff had become dissatisfied with an outside location.
‴We requested a location inside a building, but not in the corner of a building where nobody wanders,″ Cosentino said.
He said he wants to be assured he will get a better location next year.
Despite his complaints, Cosentino’s booth attracted a steady flow of people Thursday, according to one of his staff members, Ed Morris.
