Theresa Gasper: ‘After Danny O’Connor’s race, we’re very energized and very excited.’ -- Ohio Matters podcast: Episode 32

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Theresa Gasper, the Democrat running for Ohio’s 10th Congressional District in Dayton, is a first-time office-seeker.

But unlike many of her fellow Democrats, Gasper used to be a Republican.

“In 2008 I thought (the Republican Party) was starting to go off the rails a little bit and what it is today, I just don’t recognize it,” Gasper said on this week’s episode of Ohio Matters. “If somebody tried to describe themselves as a compassionate conservative at this point, I’d have to ask why they even feel the need to use that label.”

Ohio Matters is the weekly politics podcast from cleveland.com. Each week, reporters Mary Kilpatrick, Andrew Tobias and Seth Richardson sit down with political figures from around the state for in-depth interviews.

Gasper is hoping to unseat incumbent GOP U.S. Rep. Mike Turner, who has held the seat since 2003. Historically, it has been solidly Republican, but after Democrat Danny O’Connor’s near-win in a district that is more Republican, Gasper said her and others have hope for a possible blue wave.

“You know, in the primary we didn’t think so,” Gasper said. “But after Danny O’Connor’s race, we’re very energized and very excited. Like I say, in a district that Trump took by 11 ... and that was a heck of a swing. That has really encouraged a lot of us.”

Turner has not responded to Ohio Matters’ request to appear on the show.
