DNA leads detectives to suspect in 17-year-old murder

November 6, 2018

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Detectives in Florida have arrested a suspect in a 17-year-old murder after using DNA to trace him through his family tree.

Detectives with the Orlando Police Department said Monday they were able to tie DNA left at the murder scene to 38-year-old Benjamin Holmes. Holmes was arrested Friday and is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Christine Franke in 2001.

The DNA sample was run through an open-source DNA database, and it identified three possible relatives. Detectives then looked at Holmes’ family tree, identified him as the most likely suspect and got a warrant for his DNA. The sample matched the profile from the crime scene.

Earlier this year, a similar method led California detectives to arrest a suspect believed to be the Golden State Killer.
