At about 11:30 a.m. the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car-semi accident at the intersection of Highway 33 and Interstate-39 outside Portage.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and Portage Police Department responded to the scene involving two semis and a passenger car. Traffic out of Portage on Highway 33 was immediately diverted to County Highway U.

The crash is believed to have occurred, according to a statement released by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, when the car, which had exited from northbound Interstate-39 to Highway 33, was stopped at Highway 33.
The car was making a left turn onto west Highway 33 when it was struck by an eastbound semi truck. Both vehicles entered the westbound lane where they were struck by a second semi.
The drivers of both trucks and each of their passengers--four total--were taken to Divine Savior Healthcare in Portage.
A Medflight helicopter landed on a cleared portion of Highway 33, west of the crash site, and took the driver of the car to UW Hospital in Madison. A passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene.
The name of the deceased has been withheld by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office pending family notification.
As of late Saturday afternoon, traffic was continuing to be re-routed at County Highway U and Interstate-39. The crash remains under investigation.
