4 Charged in Trying to Topple Mugabe’s Government
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) _ Four ex-guerrillas who fought for Joshua Nkomo’s army in the independence war went on trial Thursday on charges of plotting to overthrow President Robert Mugabe.
Tafara Ncube, Derby Arab Nyathi, Lenin Nyathi and Judia Ncube pleaded innocent to four charges under the Law and Order Act. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to death.
The state alleges the men, guerrillas in Nkomo’s Zimbabwe African People’s Revolutionary Army in the seven-year war that led to independence, were armed by South African agents to carry out terrorist acts and plotting the overthrow of Mugabe’s government.
