ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Free agent outfielder Willie McGee has signed a one-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team announced the signing of the 39-year-old fan favorite Friday. Terms of the contract were not released.
McGee batted .300 last season with three home runs and 38 RBIs. He led the team in pinch hits (16) for the second straight season, ranking fourth in the National League. He played in 81 games, including 50 starts.
Two of his homers last season were game winners, including a pinch home run in the Cardinals’ April 8 home opener against Montreal.
McGee is a four-time All Star and was named the National League Most Valuable Player in 1985. He won batting titles in 1985 and 1990. His career totals include 2,118 hits, 76 home runs, 802 RBIs and 338 stolen bases.
