“GREEN BOOK” WINS BEST PICTURE OSCAR

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Black Panther” had the huge audiences and cultural significance. “BlacKkKlansman” tapped into the racial tensions of our day. But it was a movie about an unlikely road trip during the height of the civil rights era that ended up with the biggest prize at last night’s Oscars. Despite complaints that it soft-pedaled the deep racial divide in the South before the civil rights era took hold, “Green Book” won best movie at the Academy Awards last night. It was one of three awards on the night for Peter Farrelly’s movie. It also won for best original screenplay and Mahershala Ali won for best supporting actor.

SPIKE LEE TRIUMPHANT AT OSCARS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Usually the people who cover the Oscars don’t react much when winners are announced. That wasn’t the case in the press quarters last night when Spike Lee finally won an Oscar. He got the win for best adapted screenplay for “BlacKkKlansman.” Lee was as thrilled as those in the press room were. He bounded up the steps to the stage at the Dolby Theater, and leaped into the arms of Samuel L. Jackson who presented the award — and strode to the microphone. After using a certain 12-letter curse word to warn producers not to play him off if he spoke too long, Lee called on people to make their voices heard in the 2020 presidential election, using the catch phrase from one of his old movies, “Do The Right Thing.”

SPIKE LEE - DONALD TRUMP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Not everyone is overjoyed at Spike Lee’s winning his first Oscar. Among the dissenters: President Donald Trump. He took to Twitter today to blast Lee for urging people to vote in the 2020 presidential election, without mentioning Trump by name. In a message aimed at his Twitter followers, Trump declared Lee did — quoting here — a “racist hit on your President.” Trump went on to claim he’d “done more for African Americans” than “almost” any other president. Lee’s movie, “BlacKkKlansman” includes footage of Trump after the violent white supremacist protests in Charlottesville, Virginia.

OSCARS - BEST ACTRESS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s hard to imagine someone being dismayed at winning an Oscar. But that’s how Olivia Colman seemed after winning the academy award for best actress for her role as Queen Anne in “The Favourite.” Her win denied a victory for sentimental favorite Glenn Close — and Colman seemed aware of that as she stepped to the stage at the Dolby Theater. She called her appearance “quite stressful.” Then gazing at Close, she told her she was her idol and that winning was “not how I wanted it to be.” After last night’s defeat, Close remains the most-nominated actor never to win an academy award.

“BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY” - CAUGHT IN A LANDSLIDE

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Who knows, if “Bohemian Rhapsody” had more things for critics to complain about, it might have gone all the way to a best picture Oscar win. As it was, the movie about Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury picked up four academy awards. The biggest went to Rami Malik for best actor for his portrayal of Mercury. The movie got so-so reviews. And it was marred by sexual assault allegations against director Bryan Singer, who was fired before the movie was done. Another director took over, but Singer’s name remains officially attached to the movie, which could have made for an awkward win.

RAMI MALIK THANKS QUEEN AFTER BEST ACTOR WIN AT OSCARS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Rami Malik says he’s thrilled he got to ride the wave of Queen’s success and popularity — all the way to winning the Oscar for best lead actor. He thanked late lead singer Freddie Mercury and the surviving members of the band for their support. Malik says if the younger version of him had been given a glimpse of the future including his Oscar win — it would have blown his mind. Queen opened the Oscars broadcast with a musical performance.

OSCARS GO WITHOUT A HOST, WITHOUT A HITCH

LOS ANGELES (AP) — No host? No problem for the Oscars last night. The presenters called on to move the show along did so — and even managed to get in some laughs along the way. Will this be a trend? That’s up to the academy. But after the fiasco caused by the controversy over Kevin Hart’s invite to host, there’s at least a chance the host-less formula might get another shot. Meanwhile, people who read USA Today got trolled by Tina Fey last night. She said she, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph intended to stay on stage long enough for their award presentation — to trick the newspaper’s readers that they were, indeed, the hosts last night.

“BLACK PANTHER” WINS TWO KEY AWARDS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — If “Black Panther” had won the best picture Oscar last night, it would have been one of the highest-grossing movies to ever do so. But the Ryan Coogler movie still carved its way into the Oscar history books, thanks to Ruth E. Carter and Hannah Beachler. Carter won for best costume design while Beachler won for production design. They’re the first African-Americans to win in those categories. Both women say they hope their victories will inspire others to take up the behind-the-scenes work on movies that earned them their awards.

LADY GAGA WINS BEST ORIGINAL SONG FOR “SHALLOW” AT OSCARS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lady Gaga says she has worked hard on her craft — and is happy it paid off in an Oscar win last night. But she also says people need to understand that winning isn’t the only thing in life. She says what life is about “is not giving up.” Gaga teamed up with “A Star is Born” co-star Bradley Cooper for a tender performance of “Shallow” last night. The tune won for best original song.

SPIRIT AWARDS HANDED OUT

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) — Nothing can make someone in the movie industry feel more unappreciated than those who win at an awards ceremony held the night before the Oscars. But even as the Oscars hubbub dies down, we should mention some of the winners at Saturday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards. Barry Jenkins dominated. His screen adaptation of the James Baldwin novel “If Beale Street Could Talk” won two major awards: best film and best director. The movie also earned a win for Regina King as best supporting actress — a victory she duplicated last night at the Oscars. Jenkins used his speech to encourage the movie industry to do more films made by female directors.

R. KELLY PLEADS NOT GUILTY

CHICAGO (AP) — R. Kelly has pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually abused four people dating back to 1998, including three underage girls. Kelly walked into a Chicago courtroom today wearing an orange jumpsuit after spending the weekend in the city jail. He said little during the brief arraignment, telling the judge only his name. His lawyers spoke on his behalf.

The singer-songwriter was arrested Friday on 10 counts of aggravated sexual abuse. A judge on Saturday set bond at $1 million, meaning that Kelly must post $100,000 to be released. Defense attorney Steve Greenberg said Kelly’s people were trying to gather the money, and he expected Kelly to post bail this evening.

Kelly, who was acquitted of child pornography charges in 2008, has denied wrongdoing and his attorney says he’s confident the singer will be vindicated.

JUDGE LETS SMOLLETT LEAVE TOWN TO MEET WITH LAWYERS

CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago judge says “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett can travel out-of-state to meet his lawyers while he’s free on bond on charges that he falsely reported being attacked by two masked men. A spokeswoman for Smollett’s legal team says Los Angeles-based lawyer Mark Geragos (GEHR’-uh-gohs) is Smollett’s lead attorney. Smollett was charged last week with disorderly conduct. Chicago police say Smollett, who is black and gay, staged the attack then told police his attackers yelled racial and anti-gay slurs and referenced President Donald Trump’s campaign slogan. He was released after posting $10,000 cash. He was ordered to surrender his passport.

JA RULE CURSES THE MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Babe Ruth curse dogged the Boston Red Sox for decades. And it was a spurned goat that legend says denied the Chicago Cubs a World Series title until recently. Will history look back on the Ja Rule curse of the Minnesota Timberwolves? Probably not — but the rapper is calling down evil on the NBA team. It started Saturday when Ja Rule played at halftime of the game between Minnesota and the Milwaukee Bucks. There were sound problems and the show got off to a rough start. The T-Wolves’ official Twitter account trolled Ja Rule, irking him to the point that he declared the Timberwolves “won’t win a championship for the next 30 years.” The T-Wolves began in 1989 — and so far, haven’t won an NBA crown.
