Mount Union 34, Allegheny 30

ALLIANCE, Ohio (AP) _ Bill Borchert threw four touchdowns, including a game-clinching score in the fourth quarter, leading Mount Union to a 34-30 victory over Allegheny Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Reiko Gollate caught three of the touchdowns, one a 12-yard pass with 4:01 left that gave the Purple Raiders a 34-23 lead.

Mount Union (11-0) _ winners of the Division III championship last season _ jumped out to a 24-10 lead in the third quarter.

But Allegheny (9-2) tied the game at 24-24 on Jim Mormino’s 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. Mormino finished with 148 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Mormino’s 48-yard TD run brought Allegheny to within 34-30 with 3:29 left. The Gators got the ball back 1:35 left but could not score.

Borchert finished with 317 yards passing and one interception, his first in 226 attempts.

Mount Union, making its seventh straight playoff appearance, will meet John Carroll next Saturday.
