United States 2, Finland 1.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) _ Paul Caligiuri and Bruce Murray each had a goal and an assist Saturday night as the United States national team defeated Finland 2-1 in an exhibition soccer game at Tampa Stadium.
The United States took a 1-0 lead when Caligiuri, a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, scored off an assist by Murray.
Finland tied it early in the second half on a goal by Kimmo Tarkkio. But Murray, a member of Clemson’s 1987 NCAA Division I championship team, scored the winning goal with 23 minutes left in the game.
Finland took three shots on goal in the first half, but all were stopped by goalkeeper Kasey Keller of the Portland Timbers.
″We made some progress tonight,″ U.S. coach Robert Gansler said. ″We’re capable of playing better and we will. We have to do a better job of anticipating. We’re still a step behind.″
The U.S. team is preparing for the team’s first World Cup appearance since 1950. The team will open the tournament on June 10 against Czechoslavakia.
