58th House District: Walsh wins another term

December 3, 2018

Republican incumbent state Rep. Justin Walsh will serve another two-year term as state representative after easily winning re-election Tuesday.

Walsh, 46, of Rostraver defeated Democratic West Newton Mayor Mary Popovich to secure his second full term in office. According to unofficial results, with all 66 precincts reporting, Walsh received 62 percent of the vote while Popovich received 38 percent. Results must still be certified by the county’s elections bureau.

Tuesday’s election was a repeat of the same race in 2016, when Walsh defeated Popovich to win the seat representing the 58th District, which includes Adamsburg, Arona, Jeannette, Madison, Mt. Pleasant, Monessen, North Belle Vernon, Rostraver, West Newton, Sutersville, Sewickley and parts of South Huntingdon, East Huntingdon and Hempfield.

“We continue on the path we’ve been on, growing the economy and moving Pennsylvania forward,” Walsh said.

Walsh, a lawyer, said he wants to focus his efforts in Harrisburg on attracting jobs to the region, fighting the opioid epidemic and improving school funding.

Popovich, 65, said during the campaign she would focus on the removal of blight from local communities and the opioid crisis.
