Fantasy Football: Week 5 TE rankings

October 5, 2018

There’s one team in the AFC North that enters Week 5 with clarity at its TE position — the Cleveland Browns — and they still haven’t managed to fully unlock uber-talented David Njoku.

We think it’ll be Tyler Kroft, not C.J. Uzomah, taking over as the main receiving option at the position for Cincinnati, once again forced to turn the page following another devastating Tyler Eifert injury. But Kroft, despite being TE10 overall last season and catching seven TDs as Eifert’s replacement, has been a distant third in the TE snap pecking order this season.

Baltimore’s top pick, Hayden Hurst, finally appears ready to make his NFL regular-season debut following August foot surgery. But the Ravens have used a committee at the position that includes fellow rookie Mark Andrews, former second-rounder Maxx Williams and Nick Boyle, so how quickly Hurst gets the chance to be the guy he was drafted to be is unclear.

And after the stiff arm seen round the world two weeks ago, followed by a 5-62 receiving line Sunday night vs. Baltimore, Vance McDonald should be primed for his Steelers breakout season ... right? Jesse James’ play in McDonald’s absence to begin the season, paired with McDonald losing an early fumble last week that turned into a Ravens touchdown, at least causes a bit of pause. But we love McDonald’s matchup Sunday, and as we mentioned in this week’s exploit & avoid column, these are desperate times for fantasy tight ends, actually making McDonald one of Week 5′s better options.
