City golfers take triangular, SC 2nd, LP 3rd

Freshman Taylor Skibinski carded a four-over-par 78 to pace Michigan City (368) to a triangular win over second-place South Central (459) and third-place La Porte (492) in an 18-hole meet Friday at Beechwood. Skibinski fired a one-under 37 on her back nine to secure medalist honors for the Wolves (3-0). Lia Thomas followed with an 85, while Emily Gushrowski posted a 97. Sara Poulin carded 108. Chloe Ryan led the Satellites with 104, and Morgan Hinz tallied 112. Julie Myers had 119, while Eve Masson chipped in 124. Madeline Fleshman paced the Slicers with 97, and Gabby Hull had 128. Ella Schable shot 132, and Emma Fleshman added 135.

2019 hoop prospect transfers to La Lumiere

Keion Brooks, Jr., the No. 15 overall prospect in the Class of 2019 for the outlet 247 Sports, officially announced he was transferring from North Side High School in Fort Wayne, Ind. to La Lumiere School to finish his prep basketball career. The 6-foot-7 wing is one of Indiana’s best players and is a prime target of schools such as Indiana, Michigan State, Purdue, Louisville, Michigan and Kentucky.

“I want to thank the city of Fort Wayne for all the love and support,” Brooks said on his Twitter account Friday. “But for my senior year, I’ll be attending La Lumiere.”

La Porte offering Slicer Passes

for 2018-19 athletic events

The La Porte High School Athletic Department has begun selling 2018-19 Slicer Passes at the high school. The pass allows for admittance to all home Slicer athletic events, excluding tournaments & invitationals, at a savings from gate admittance price. They can be purchased in increments of 10 ($35), 15 ($52.50) or 20 ($70) admittances, is transferable, and allows more than one individual to enter on the same pass. Slicer Passes will not be available at athletic events. They must be purchased at the athletic office Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Senior citizens that are 62 and older may purchase an all-sports pass for $30 that allows admittance to all home Slicer athletic events for the 2018-19 school year, excluding tournaments & invitationals.

Night/Silent Auction Saturday

A Trivia Night and Silent Auction to support the La Porte Soccer Club for boys and girls soccer will be on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Civic Auditorium Banquet Hall (downstairs). You can help support area youth by donating items/money for the silent auction, and joining them for a night of fun, auctions, and trivia hosted by Ben Konowitz. Slicers’ girls golf schedule changes

La Porte’s girls golf match versus Michigan City and Chesterton scheduled for Aug. 16 will now be played on Aug. 15 at Beechwood Golf Course in La Porte. Also, the Slicers’ contest against Crown Point and Lake Central on Aug. 21 will now be played at White Hawk in Crown Point and not at Beechwood.

La Porte Crush 9U baseball tryouts

The La Porte Crush will hold tryouts for a 2019 9U baseball team on Friday, Aug. 10, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 11, from 2-4 p.m. at 2322 North 100 West, La Porte. Annual United Way Golf Outing Monday

The 14th annual United Way of La Porte County Golf Outing will be Monday at Pottawattomie Country Club in Michigan City. Registration and lunch begin at 11 a.m., with a shotgun start at noon, and awards dinner at 5 p.m. Cost is $900 for a foursome, which includes golf, cart, lunch, dinner, side games and prizes, and beverage sampling booths – a hole-in-one can win a new car. Salvation Army to host Red Shield Run 5K

The Salvation Army of Michigan City is gearing is hosting it second annual Red Shield Run 5K Powered by NIPSCO, a fundraiser supporting programs and services offered by The Salvation Army in Michigan City. The Red Shield Run is a timed road race starting at 8 a.m. Aug. 11. It will begin at Krueger Middle School, 2001 Springland Ave., and runners will head down Springland and circle through the Pottawattomie Park neighborhood before returning to Krueger. Trophies will be presented to the top male and female overall finishers; and medals will be presented to the top finisher in several age categories. Cost is $25 in advance or $30 on race day. New Indiana Soccer license plates available

New Indiana Soccer license plates are available Indiana BMV license branches or certified partner locations. The newly designed plates help support Indiana Soccer/Indy 11 outreach programs that help children across the state.

The plate can be registered on passenger cars, trucks up to 11,000 pounds, motorcycles and RVs. The cost is $40, with $25 going to Indiana Soccer. Charity softball tourney benefits Portage parks

Friends of Portage Township Foundation is hosting its inaugural Charity Softball Tournament on Aug. 11 at Haven Hollow Park at 330 W. CR 700N in Valparaiso. Proceeds will benefit the Portage Township Department of Parks and Recreation. The men’s double-elimination tournament is for players 18 and older, with cash prizes for first and second place. Advance registration fee is $325 with a $50 deposit received by Friday, or $375 the day of the event.
