Grants Support Music Classes at McKay, Boys and Girls Club
FITCHBURG — Free band class for fitth and sixth graders at McKay Arts Academy and a summer ukelele class at the Boys and Girls Club through partnerships with Indian Hill Music will be supported by grants from local banks.
In the summer, the Littleton-based music school will offer a ukelele class at the club for children between the ages of five and eight and expand to classes for eight to 12-year-olds and high schoolers in the fall.
“We’re really excited about being able to provide music classes more than once a week and with different instruments,” said Donata Martin, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club in Leominster.
The partnership with Indian Hill has been about two years in the making, she said.
At McKay, this is the second year that staff from the music school will teach nearly 60 students how to play instruments like the flute, saxophone, and percussion and play in a concert band.
Indian Hill plans to expand the band class to seventh graders in the next academic year, according to the school.
The music programs are possible through a $5,000 grant from Rollstone Bank & Trust and a $3,500 grant from Workers Credit Union.
Martin Connors Jr., president and CEO of Rollstone Bank & Trust, and Douglas Peterson, president and CEO of Workers Credit Union, said in a statement that they are happy to help Indian Hill expand its outreach by helping children from underserved neighborhoods in Central Massachusetts.
Lisa Fiorentino, chief executive officer for Indian Hill, said in the statement that the banks have supported the school through sponsorships and donations.
She added that Rollstone Bank & Trust has been a leader in supporting music outreach in Fitchburg and Leominster.
Martin met Fiorentino a few years ago and they both thought it would be good to work together. Their collaboration and support from the banks are helpful, she said.
“It’s a good example of the community working together to benefit children,” Martin said.
