Soviets Plan to Watch Nicaraguan Baseball With Eye to Olympic Team

March 12, 1987

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ The Soviet Union will send two officials to watch Nicaraguan baseball with an eye to fielding their own team in the 1992 Olympic Games, a government official said Wednesday.

Yamil Zuniga, director of the Nicaraguan Sports Institute, also said a youth team will travel to the Soviet Union for exhibition games in August. It will be the first time a Nicaraguan baseball team has played in the Soviet Union.

Zuniga said the Soviets are interested in preparing a team for the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, where baseball will be an Olympic sport for the first time.

Baseball has been Nicaragua’s most popular sport since U.S. Marines brought it to the country during the U.S. intervention of the early 1900s.
