Your Turn: Dec. 18

December 18, 2018

Define man-madeEvery article written when the subject concerns the warming of the planet contains certain words that are used to express probability. Words such as perhaps, possible, could, may, or maybe, which express uncertainty. Nobody really knows. What we do know is what Al Gore in the ’90s warned us about, and that was urban sprawl. Urban sprawl is real, no maybes about it. I wonder how many millions and millions of square miles there are of concrete. How many millions upon millions of homes and buildings with air conditioners spewing hot air into the surrounding areas. How many billions of all sorts of vehicles on the roads each generating over two hundred degrees of heat? And a lot more.In that sense, global warming is man-made. By the way, scientists who study the cosmos have said the sun has been very quiet, which suggests perhaps, maybe or could be — a pending ice age. Possibly. Who knows?Leo Q. GomezLegislature must actRe: “Free-standing ER business relies mostly on patient confusion,” Business column by Chris Tomlinson, Wednesday:In my opinion Mr. Tomlinson was right on target in his analysis of the free-standing ERs. Their practices are extremely deceptive and can cause excessive charges for very limited, inadequate service. It is very sad that our state Legislature is unable or unwilling to help the people who are scammed by these businesses.I know of one instance where the only service for the patient was to write a prescription and no tests of any kind. The charge for this “service” exceeded $1,500. This is criminal and yet the Legislature does nothing to protect the citizens.Turner HopkinsSkepticism OKRe: “Fear of robots blocking progress,” Another View by Louis Sentis, Dec.8:Sentis states that “AI for warfare is met with knee-jerk skepticism” and talks about how “dangers built into autonomous systems are challenges we must overcome.”Autonomous machines used for warfare are truly terrifying. Their potential for the mass killing of humans is unlimited, and rapid progress along these lines continues worldwide.Yes, I am skeptical.Neal WagnerDouble standardYou don’t allow rent-a-car companies to set up in public parking lots. So, why allow rent-a-scooter companies everywhere on public sidewalks?Mary Parks
