Soldier Charged With Murdering Seven

February 8, 1989

MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ A prosecutor filed murder charges against a soldier accused of killing seven people and wounding nine when he ran amok with a rifle after a quarrel with his girlfriend.

Prosecutor Adolfo Alcoseba charged Constable Jesus Negro on Tuesday with murder and attempted murder in a provincial court in Cebu city 350 miles southeast of Manila, the government-run Philippine News Agency said.

The military said Negro, a member of the elite Special Action Force, went on a shooting spree Nov. 30 after he left his girlfriend’s home in Tiber village in Cebu.

Five people were killed and five injured in the first volley when Negro fired his semi-automatic rifle at neighbors. He then hitched a ride to a nearby town and opened fire while en route, killing two more and wounding four.

Negro was dismissed from the service five days after he surrendered to authorities. No date for the arraignment was given.
