Lane College 25, Miss. Valley St. 14
TUPELO, Miss. (AP) _ Fred Lane rushed for 87 yards and had two touchdowns as Lane College defeated Mississippi Valley State 25-14 on Saturday at the Tupelo Classic.
Lane College, a Division II independent team, handed Division I-AA Mississippi Valley their second straight loss.
Mississippi Valley (0-2) almost recovered from a 25-0 deficit with a mid-fourth quarter rally, scoring two touchdowns. But after a kick recovery with 4:02 to play, Lane’s defense stepped up its pressure again and Valley turned the ball over on four downs.
After the kickoff, a 19-yard burst by Marcus Green and two runs for 21 yards by Lane took the ball inside the Devils’ 10-yard line. Quarterback Thaddeus Guidry then plunged over from 1 yard out giving Lane a 6-0 lead.
Lane’s second TD was set up by a defensive line surge that caused Valley quarterback Keith Poindexter to fumble at the Devil’s 21-yard line.
Valley finally got on the board with 5:59 to play as Adrian Smith connected with tight end Marvin Bailey for a 13-yard score. Alonzo Terrell hit Steve Booze with a halfback pass for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 25-8.
