Fire sweeps through Brazilian shantytown slum
SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian firefighters are battling a blaze that has destroyed more than 100 homes as it sweeps through a shantytown in Sao Paulo.
The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon in a slum located in front of several apartment buildings under construction on the city’s east side.
Capt. Marcos Palumbo of the Sao Paulo fire department told reporters the blaze has destroyed at least 100 homes and there are no reports of deaths or injuries. Most of the shacks of wood or brick were believed to have housed numerous people.
Palumbo says the fire may have been caused by a short circuit or a cooking gas canister that exploded.
