Five Ordered to Jail for Trespass
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) _ A federal magistrate has ordered five anti-nuclear protesters, including the Berrigan brothers, to serve five days in jail for trespassing at Griffiss Air Force Base.
Defendants in the non-jury trial Thursday were Rev. Daniel Berrigan of New York City and Philip Berrigan of Baltimore; Suzanne Schmidt and Brian Barrett of Baltimore; George Ostensen of West Hampton, N.Y., and Shirley Lockwood of Syracuse.
Magistrate Edward Conan ordered each to pay a $75 fine. When all but Schmidt refused ″as a matter of conscience,″ Conan imposed a five-day jail sentence.
The six defendants and five others were arrested last Nov. 28 after they moved onto property of the Strategic Air Force base at Rome, N.Y., and refused to leave.
