DePaul University Student Charged With Running Call-Girl Ring
CHICAGO (AP) _ A 22-year-old student has been charged with pandering and accused of running a $150-an-hour call-girl service from her dormitory room at DePaul University, police said.
Police broke down Joyce Owens’ door with a sledgehammer Friday to arrest her on the Roman Catholic university campus, said Lt. Wayman Jones.
The Cook County state’s attorney’s office said Ms. Owens ran an escort service called Exposure Unlimited. She may have been supervising as many as 30 prostitutes and coordinating their ″dates″ with beepers, Jones said.
Customers had been solicited through advertisements in a weekly newspaper, he said.
″As far as we know, no other DePaul personnel or students were involved in this,″ Jones said. ″The price would have been too prohibitive at $150 an hour.″
If convicted on the pandering charge, Ms. Owens could face three years in prison, authorities said.
DePaul spokesman Jim Herlihy said school officials had no indication that Ms. Owens was anything more than a history and communications student, adding, ″It goes without saying that this is shock.″
