Celebration salutes centennial of Polish independence

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The 100th anniversary of Polish Independence will be celebrated here with a variety of events on November 11.

A special Mass will be held at St. John Cantius Church, 906 College Avenue, at 9:30 a.m., followed by dedication of the new Polish Heritage Garden at 11 :30 a.m. at the Polish American Cultural Center, 6501 Lansing Avenue, in Slavic Village.

The garden features permanent placards representing Polish history along a circular brick pathway. Refreshments will be served after the dedication.

That afternoon a special 100th anniversary Independence Concert – presented by Cleveland Poles, the Polish American Cultural Center and the Polish Studies Initiative at Cleveland State University (CSU) – will be held at CSU in the Mandel Honor College building, 1899 East 22nd Street, at 3 p.m.

The program includes folk dances, classical music and soldiers’ songs, with performances by students from several Polish schools in Cleveland.

Cleveland Opera soprano Dorota Sobieska and pianist, Dr. Konrad Binienda also will be featured.

Refreshments will be available after the concert.
