Hair Spurs Boy’s Disqualification

June 11, 2000

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (AP) _ Theo Sullow’s victory in the first leg of a national math competition won’t get him to the next round unless he cuts his hair, an official said.

Mercedes Garcia Guevara disqualified the 12-year-old boy from the second round of Nicaragua’s Math Olympics because his ``weird hairdo″ _ long and parted down the middle _ did not meet the requirements of having a ``personal presentation of a student.″

Garcia Guevara is the government representative in Esteli, where the national competition is being held. Esteli is 90 miles north of Managua.

Students have marched in the streets to protest the disqualification. And the boy’s parents, originally from Germany, said they were appealing the decision, and would ask the German Embassy for help if they received no response.
