One person killed in State Street fire
La PORTE – ATF and the state Fire Marshal’s office are investigating the death of a man in a State Street apartment fire in La Porte late Tuesday.
The victim was 74-year-old Richard Roderick, who died in his bedroom during the fire, said County Coroner Bob Cutler.
No firefighters were injured.
The La Porte Fire Department received a call at 10:33 p.m. Tuesday of a structure fire at 210 State St., according to Fire Chief Andy Snyder.
Fire crews arrived minutes later and saw smoke and heavy fire in the entryway and a second-floor apartment, he said.
“The main body of the fire was knocked down” by 11:13 p.m., Snyder said, and “a victim was located shortly thereafter, deceased.
La Porte Fire Department investigators are working with an Indiana State Fire Marshal’s agent and an ATF investigator to determine the cause.
The La Porte Fire Department was assisted by La Porte Police, La Porte County EMS, NIPSCO, La Porte County EMA and the Red Cross.
