Security Concerns Cause Plane’s Diversion

October 23, 2003

TORONTO (AP) _ An El Al flight bound for Toronto from Tel Aviv diverted first to Montreal and then to Hamilton, Ontario, on Thursday because of an unspecified security threat, police and the airline said.

Laura Parski, assistant general manager for El Al in Toronto, said Flight 105 stopped briefly at Montreal’s Mirabel Airport, then proceeded to the John C. Munro International Airport in Hamilton, 40 miles southwest of Toronto.

She cited ``security concerns″ for the diversion of the plane carrying 180 passengers, but provided no further details.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said it was investigating, but spokesman Sgt. Jocelyn Mimeault also refused to discuss any details about the security threat.

Passengers on the plane were transported by bus to Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, while others awaiting the flight in Toronto to continue on to Los Angeles were taken by bus to Hamilton, Parski said.

In Hamilton, tactical police teams met the plane, but overall airport operations continued uninterrupted, said Ken Mitchell, the airport spokesman.
