Alabama woman pleads guilty in deaths of father, cousin

May 7, 2019

GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama facing a potential death penalty in the deaths of her father and cousin has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

The Gadsden Times reports 45-year-old Margie Morgan Kelly pleaded guilty Monday to murder in the killings of her father, 55-year-old Rocky Morgan, and her 38-year-old cousin, James Bachelor.

Kelly was sentenced to 25 years in prison, while she could have faced execution if convicted on the more serious capital charge.

Kelly’s husband already is serving 99 years for the killings.

Authorities believe Morgan and Bachelor were shot to death in 2009. Prosecutors believe the couple then created a pyre of wood and tires to burn the bodies, but remains were found strewn across a field.

Kelly previously pleaded guilty to charges that included corpse abuse after the slayings.
