Candidate Fires Aide Over Web Site
PHILADELPHIA (AP) _ Mayoral candidate Dwight Evans has fired a campaign official and another has resigned after a supporter created a phony Web site about a Democratic rival and his views on race.
The Web site, www.white99.com, claimed to be John White’s official campaign site but was really created by a friend of a deputy campaign manager of the Evans campaign.
Evans said the site was created without his knowledge.
John White’s lawyer, Mark Mendell, said he will pursue civil and criminal charges _ though he didn’t specify against whom. ``Do you really believe that something of this magnitude did not have blessings from on high?″ he said.
The site quoted from an interview with White in a Spanish language newspaper, Al Dia, when he said: ``The black and the brown, if we unite, we’re going to control this city.″
White, a former Housing Authority director, and Evans, a state representative, are both black. They are seeking the Democratic nomination in the race to replace Mayor Edward Rendell, who is barred by the city charter from seeking a third term.
White said the quote was accurate, but had been taken out of context in Al Dia. What he meant, he said, was that minorities should participate in the political process.
Evans said he has apologized to White and that the campaign official who knows the author of the Web site has been fired. Evans’ campaign manager has also resigned.
