ADT Helps Kansas City Family Survive Horrific House Fire

August 9, 2018

BOCA RATON, Fla., Aug. 09, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- ADT Inc. (NYSE: ADT), the leading provider of monitored security and interactive home and business automation solutions in the United States and Canada, celebrated a LifeSaver event yesterday in Kansas City, MO where a family survived a horrific house fire due to their ADT security system and first responders.

One evening in June, Kayla Hoffman was dozing on the couch while her husband was out with friends. The couple’s baby was asleep upstairs. Suddenly, the home’s smoke detector started beeping and Kayla jumped up.

Smelling smoke, she saw fire spreading from the garage into the house. Kayla ran to rescue her baby, and both barely escaped as flames engulfed the home.

“It was terrifying. I can’t imagine anything more frightening than fleeing a burning house with a baby in your arms,” said Hoffman. “If the smoke detector hadn’t triggered, I don’t know what would have happened.”

The smoke detector sent a signal to an ADT Customer Care Center in Florida. Immediately following up, ADT Dispatcher Jamar Cunningham phoned 911 to report the blaze and provide the home’s address.

“It’s my job to relay accurate information as quickly as possible so first responders can do their jobs,” said Cunningham. “I’m glad everyone got out and there weren’t any injuries.”

While their house was destroyed along with many of their possessions, the Hoffmans are grateful their ADT system, backed up by professional monitoring, helped prevent a tragedy.

At the LifeSaver celebration they met Cunningham for the first time since the fire. He was presented ADT’s highest recognition, a LifeSaver Award. Also honored, the Southern Platte Fire Protection District, which received a $5,000 contribution from ADT.

While accepting the contribution, firefighters stressed the importance of having a fire escape plan and using professionally installed and monitored smoke detectors. Since January 2018, the U.S. Fire Administration reports at least 1,500 Americans have died in home fires.
