FIFA Team Completes Morocco Visit

February 29, 2000

RABAT, Morocco (AP) _ A FIFA inspection committee on Tuesday completed a five-day visit to Morocco having examined the North African country’s bid to stage the 2006 World Cup.

Soccer’s world governing body, led by Alan Rothenberg of the United States, studied Morocco’s proposed soccer facilities as well as hotel, transport and telecommunications infrastructure.

The king of Morocco, Mohammed VI, met with the FIFA team Monday to press the country’s claim to bring the World Cup to Africa for the first time.

Morocco, which made unsuccessful bids to stage the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, is up against Brazil, England, Germany and South Africa to stage the 2006 showpiece event.

FIFA’s 24-member executive committee will announce the winning candidate in July.
