European Stock Roundup
LONDON (AP) _ European stocks finished slightly higher in quiet trading Monday, boosted by gains in telecommunications and media stocks.
The Dow Jones Stoxx Index of shares in European companies rose 1.21 points, or 0.3 percent, to 392.92.
The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx Index, which tracks companies in countries that joined the single currency, rose 1.94 points to 434.20. The Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50 Index rose 29 points to 5,204.6 and the Dow Jones Stoxx 50 Index rose 19.7 points to 5,015.2.
London’s market was closed for the day due to a public holiday.
In other domestic markets, Frankfurt stocks were slightly higher on the back of gains in Deutsche Telekom. The 30-blue chip index was up 0.4 percent, at 7,339.22, in light trading.
Deutsche Telekom was up 1.1 percent, with the market approving its takeover of Powertel through VoiceStream.
French stocks ended mixed, with media stocks generally outperforming the market.
The benchmark CAC 40 index of most traded stocks closed up 0.3 percent, or 19.91 points, at 6,615.02 points. Vivendi and pay-television group Canal Plus, which are in the process of merging with Canada’s Seagram, were among the CAC 40′s main gainers.
Milan’s MIBtel Index was up 59 points at 47,417 and Amsterdam’s AEX Index up 4.25 points at 695.60, while Belgium’s Bel-20 Index rose 9.04 points to 3,172.03.
