Huber upsets Majoli at Leipzig Open; Novotna, Coetzer win
LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) _ Defending champion Anke Huber, battling stomach pain, upset French Open champion Iva Majoli in three sets Friday to reach the semifinals of the Leipzig Open.
The German will face the Czech Republic’s Jana Novotna, the world’s No. 2 player. In the other semifinal, top-ranked Martina Hingis plays South Africa’s Amanda Coetzer.
Huber needed 2 hours, 5 minutes, to beat Majoli, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 in a rematch of last year’s final.
Majoli rallied from 0-3 down in the final set, then let a 4-3 lead slip away against the world’s seventh-ranked player in a baseline duel riddled with errors.
``It was a match with high tempo and a lot of mistakes,″ Huber said. ``I didn’t feel well, but I fought my way through.″
Coetzer defeated Polish qualifier Magdalena Grzybowska 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), while Novotna also beat a qualifier, compatriot Sandra Kleinova, 6-4, 6-2.
Hingis had reached the semifinals Thursday, beating Sabine Applemans in straight sets.
