Alpine Valley, Boston Mills, Brandywine making snow for expected opening later this month

MUNSON TOWNSHIP – Never mind what Mother Nature has in mind: Snow is in the forecast through the weekend for Alpine Valley, Boston Mills and Brandywine ski resorts.

Snowmaking commenced Tuesday night at Northeast Ohio’s three ski resorts and should continue nonstop through this weekend, said spokesman Thomas Conti. “We’re looking at four straight days of snowmaking before the warm-up next week,” he said.

The resorts need temperatures below freezing to crank up the snowmaking. The colder, the better, said Conti. “If it was 15 degrees for 24 hours, we could open tomorrow.”

As it is, he said, the resorts are looking at projected opening dates at least two weeks away. He’s hoping all three will be open by Friday, December 21, just as local schools are letting out for winter break. “We really want to be open for the holiday weekend,” he said.

Temperatures this week are expected to stay cold, down to the low- to mid-20s overnight, and into the high 20s and low 30s during the day. A warm-up on Sunday will lift temperatures into the mid- to upper-30s for most of next week.

Conti said he’s hoping that temperatures next week are lower than currently forecasted. “In Northeast Ohio, we know winter is coming whether we like it or not,” he said. “We might as well take advantage of it.”

Alpine Valley is located in Geauga County; Brandywine and Boston Mills, in northern Summit County. All three are owned by Missouri-based Peak Resorts, which owns 17 resorts throughout the Midwest and East.

If you don’t want to wait another two weeks to ski, head east into western New York, where several ski resorts are already operating, including Holiday Valley in Ellicottville. Peek’n Peak, in Clymer, New York, plans to open Saturday, Dec. 8.

Coming Sunday: The Plain Dealer’s annual round-up of regional ski resorts, including new features, prices and more.
