29 Die in Fireworks Factory Blast

June 30, 2000

HONG KONG (AP) _ An explosion at a fireworks factory in southern China on Friday killed at least 29 people and injured more than 200 others, an official Chinese news agency reported.

Beijing’s Xinhua News Agency said the explosion in Jiangmen city, 50 miles north of Macau, occurred at about 8 a.m, and flattened the two-story, Hong Kong-funded factory.

The cause of the blast was not immediately known, Xinhua said.

Hong Kong Radio reported earlier that at least 30 people were killed and quoted an unidentified Jiangmen official as saying that rescuers were still pulling bodies from the debris. The official also said the explosion sent up a large mushroom, and that numerous houses near the factory were damaged.

All those killed were believed to be factory workers, Hong Kong Radio said.

TVB, a Hong Kong TV network, showed footage of smoke billowing over the scene.
