Rape Suspect Shot To Death In Police Station
MAYAGUEZ, Puerto Rico (AP) _ An escaped convict who was being held at the police station for investigation of rape was shot to death Thursday by a friend of the alleged victim.
The assailant was immediately disarmed and taken into custody, but was not immediately identified by police.
Alberto Irizarry Sanabria, 27, who escaped six months ago from the Bayamon Regional Jail, was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of raping a 19-year- old woman, police said.
As a group of friends and relatives of the alleged victim, who was not identified, were giving statements to police, one of them ran over to the holding cell area and fired six shots through the bars.
In the confusion, the keys to the cell could not be located and Criminal Investigations Corps Chief Victor Kemuel Morales ordered the lock broken so the prisoner could be removed. Irizarry Sanabria was pronounced dead on arrival at San Antonio Hospital.
Lt. Col. Samuel Lopez, western division chief of police, ordered an administrative investigation to determine whether there was negligence in the death.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed the shooting.
