BLAINE — The Austin Bruins are just four games into the season, but they’ve already learned how to survive — and thrive — in close games.
Andy Willis scored with nine seconds to go in overtime Saturday, giving the Bruins a 4-3 victory against the Maryland Black Bears on the final day of the season-opening North American Hockey League Showcase.
The Bruins ended the Showcase with a 3-0-1 record, playing four one-goal games, including three that went to overtime.
Dante Sheriff scored twice and Valdemar Ahlberg once for Austin in regulation.
Kyle McClellan stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced in goal for the Bruins, who were slightly outshot 25-24.
Austin plays its home openers on Friday and Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against Central Division rival Bismarck, at Riverside Arena.
