Happy New Year’s baby: 1st child of 2019 born at GPH

January 3, 2019

She entered the world a little sooner than expected and had the distinction of being the first baby born at Great Plains Health on New Year’s Day 2019.

Hazlee Thea Sue Gallardo smiled up at her mom at 10:14 a.m. Tuesday morning. Mom Danielle Greeley, dad Jud Gallardo and brother Holden Gallardo, 2½, were excited to welcome her into their family. The family lives in North Platte.

“She came in pretty quick,” Danielle said. “We didn’t think it was going to go as fast, but one thing led to another and here she is.”

Danielle said the baby’s due date was Jan. 7.

“So she came at 39 weeks and one day,” Danielle said. “We like joked around when we found out the due date and we’re like, she’s going to come on New Year’s.”

She said family on both sides had tried to guess the birth date.

“A couple people were close, but I don’t think anyone was spot on,” Danielle said. “Everyone joked about her being a New Year’s baby, and sure enough.”

Hazlee weighed 5 pounds, 9 ounces and was 19¼ inches long.

“When (her brother) first saw her, he kept saying, ‘baby sister,’ and tried feeding her pudding and French fries, and he was mad when we told him no,” Danielle said. “He keeps grabbing her hand and he’ll kiss her hand and kiss her forehead.”

Jud said Holden isn’t quite sure what to think.

“We don’t know yet if we’re going to have any more — maybe one more,” Jud said.

Danielle said once her contractions started, it was just a few hours before baby made her appearance.

“We were just going to kick back (for New Year’s Eve),” Jud said. “She was too far along to have anything planned.”

The couple went to the hospital about 2 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

“They didn’t think she was going to come until about 5 in the evening on New Year’s Day,” Danielle said. “So we kept on asking, ‘Are there any other babies yet?’”

“We wanted the bragging rights,” Jud said with a laugh.

The parents were appreciative of the hospital staff.

“Everyone here has been super great too, super helpful,” Danielle said. “They are here to answer all the questions with the whole labor and delivery process. They were awesome. They helped so much.”

“I’ve been very pleased, it’s very comfortable,” Jud said of GPH.
