Woman suspect in critical condition after Phoenix shooting
PHOENIX (AP) — A woman suspect is in critical condition after being shot by an off-duty sheriff’s deputy she fired at while he tried to arrest her for trying to cash a stolen check.
Sgt. Alan Pfohl of the Phoenix Police Department says the shooting occurred after 1 p.m. Friday at the Food City at 32nd Street and McDowell Road.
He says a clerk discovered the check was stolen and contacted the uniformed Maricopa County deputy providing security there off-duty.
After the deputy grabbed the suspect by the shirt she pulled a gun from her waist and fired at him, missing.
He returned fire and struck her several times and she was taken to a hospital. The suspect was unidentified.
A second woman suspect escaped.
Pfohl did not identify the 27-year-old deputy.
