Ponca couple wins $50,000 on Christmas lights television contest

November 29, 2018

PONCA - A couple outside of Ponca not only has their property lit up with Christmas lights, but now has their pocket books lit up too, with $50,000.

Gene Watchorn and Julie McDowell won the “Great Christmas Light Fight” television competition, which aired Monday.

At their house they have more than 100,000 lights displayed throughout, 90 inflatables, and 30 reindeer on the roof. Inside they have more than 6,000 Christmas figurines and 19 full size Christmas trees fully ornamented.

McDowell tells News Talk WJAG they were very surprised when they won the show.

“We in no way thought we would even be accepted for the show. We just have regular Christmas decorations, we don’t have anything synchronized to music, nothing computerized. We just have basic good ole fashion Christmas lights and decoration.”

McDowell says it all started 14 years ago when they put up lights to show their grandchildren and has since taken off and gotten bigger every year since.

She says Gene starts putting up lights Labor Day weekend and finishes up around Thanksgiving.

The Christmas decorations will stay up through Christmas at their house, outside of Ponca on 882nd Road.

They have open houses Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 6 to 9 P.M.
