Wings’ Lidstrom Denies Pushing Deal
DETROIT (AP) _ Detroit defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom says, contrary to what was reported, he has not told his agent to begin negotiations with the Red Wings.
``I haven’t told him to start negotiations,″ Lidstrom was quoted as saying in today’s Detroit Free Press.
Booth Newspapers, quoting a source close to Lidstrom, reported Monday that Lidstrom met with his agent Don Meehan over the weekend in Toronto to begin negotiations on a new contract.
Lidstrom said while he did meet with Meehan and plans to talk with him again this week, he didn’t tell him to begin talks with the Wings.
``I haven’t told him to do that,″ Lidstrom said. ``I haven’t made up my mind _ that’s where things are at.″
A message was left today with Meehan’s office in Mississauga, Ontario, seeking comment.
Lidstrom has said he might play out his option this year and return to Sweden so he could raise his children in his homeland.
Lidstrom was a finalist last season for the Norris Trophy, given each year to the NHL’s best defenseman, and was voted to the league’s All-Star first team. He had 17 goals and 59 points last season.
