New MCC Scholarship Set Up for Immigrants
A new Deolinda Mello Memorial Scholarship has been established to support students at Middlesex Community College.
The annual $500 scholarship will target Lowell residents who are immigrants and/or children of immigrants, who are pursuing higher education at Middlesex, and who wish to dedicate their lives to helping others.
A lifelong Lowell resident, Mello was a child of immigrants, an upbringing that imbued her with strong beliefs that each immigrant and refugee brings talents, skills and culture that enrich the community. She dedicated her life to caring for and helping everyone -- regardless of their race, color, creed or nationality -- and that passion became her career.
To celebrate Mello’s legacy, the scholarship has been created by members of the Portuguese-American community in Lowell. It will be awarded annually by Middlesex and is being administered by the Greater Lowell Community Foundation.
