Watchmen’s strike at Louvre turns away tourists
PARIS (AP) _ Tourists hoping to see the Mona Lisa and thousands of other artworks at the Louvre were turned away Saturday by striking night watchmen who blocked the museum’s doors for a third straight day.
The watchmen, protesting working conditions, blocked the glass pyramid entrance in the main courtyard of the Louvre _ one of the world’s most popular tourist sites. In May, an average 20,000 people visit the museum daily.
The roughly 100 guards on strike are protesting personnel cuts, complaints about their uniforms and a loss of vacation time to compensate for night shifts.
