Cano suspended 80 games...Judge and Harper...Caps take 2-0 lead home
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners All-Star second baseman Robinson Cano (kan-OH’) has been suspended 80 games for violating baseball’s joint drug agreement. The league announced Cano’s suspension today. Cano tested positive for Furosemide, a diuretic. In a statement released through the players’ association, Cano says, “This substance was given to me by a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic to treat a medical ailment.” He said he didn’t realize it was banned. It’s the first major strike in a career that has Hall of Fame potential.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two of baseball’s most prodigious power hitters are on display when Aaron Judge and the New York Yankees visit Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals in interleague play. Judge has knocked in 14 runs during a seven-game RBI streak. Harper homered Sunday night to help Washington finish a four-game sweep in Arizona. Both teams have been rolling, too. New York is 19-3 in its last 22 games, while the Nationals have won 13 of 15.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — First-place Houston’s Gerrit Cole goes against Jaime Barria of the Angels, who are just a game back of the pace-setting Astros in the AL West. Cole has emerged as one of the AL’s best pitchers --he’s 4-and-1 with a 1.43 ERA and 86 strikeouts. He’ll face a high-powered offense featuring standout two-way rookie sensation Shohei Ohtani, who likely will DH after racking up 11 strikeouts on the mound Sunday in a victory over the Twins.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Adam Wainwright back on the 10-day disabled list after the right-hander struggled with velocity in his last start and said he needed “to pause and get it right.” The 36-year-old Wainwright also was on the DL with elbow inflammation before returning Sunday in San Diego. But he lasted just 2 1/3 innings in the Cardinals’ 5-3 loss to the Padres. Wainwright is 1-3 with a 4.00 ERA in four starts this season.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning are in a historically difficult spot after losing twice at home to open their NHL Eastern Conference final against the Washington Capitals. Game 3 is tonight in Washington. Of the 41 previous times a team lost the first two games in the conference finals, 39 went on to lose the series — including every team that lost its first two at home.
